Engaging the Earl Accidental Peers Book 4 edition by Diana Quincy Romance eBooks

Engaging the Earl reminded me a bit of Wuthering Heights, in that all of the characters are awful and I couldn’t bring myself to cheer for any of them. Edward and Kat were in love when they were younger, but her father forbid their marriage. Edward went off to war to make something of himself, but didn’t return right away. Now, he’s been given an earldom for his heroics, but Kat is betrothed to a viscount. What happens after their reunion is a frustrating tug-of-war full of deceit.

I liked Engaging the Earl in the beginning. I do enjoy these second chance romances, but once certain events started happening, it quickly lost me. Kat does want Edward back and is ready to call of her engagement to be with him. However, he feels like he can’t take a wife because the war has left him damaged; he suffers from post traumatic stress. He does some despicable things to keeps her away, and while I understand why he did them, I just can’t believe he’d do that to someone he loves. Plus, at the end, he all of a sudden thinks he’ll be able to keep in control enough to take a wife and just tells her that they’re getting married, despite her refusals. He hurt her terribly, so I was glad when she turned him down. Not a good sign for a romance.

My biggest issue with Engaging the Earl was how cheating was handled. Everyone is cheating on everyone. I have no problem with unfaithfulness in fiction, but this all felt forced. No one had any chemistry, and everyone was lying to everyone else. Elena, who was painted as a strumpet, didn’t strike me as the type to be involved with a taken man, and yet she does with two! And I thought having Kat’s fiance cheat was just an excuse to have her leave him without being the bad guy for sharing some passionate kisses with Edward before calling off their engagement. It was all a messy web of lies and I didn’t enjoy it.

I’ve enjoyed this series until now. Engaging the Earl was full of characters that I couldn’t get behind, and none of the relationships seemed healthy or happy. Even the supposed friendships read false and tainted.

Engaging the Earl Accidental Peers Book 4 edition by Diana Quincy Romance eBooks Reviews

I liked this book. It showers that our soldiers whether whatever war or time they served, all have ptsd. It was great that the lady wanted to help her mate like most of us wives do today.
I love regency romances! I've read each of the prior books in this series, and liked or loved most of them. This was a very good book. It had an intriguing premise - 2nd son leaves for war to improve his prospects with his young sweetheart, only to return years later to find her engaged to another. The heroine, Lady Katherine Granville, was fantastic - beautiful, mature, and loyal. The hero, Edward Stanhope, Lord Randolph, was compelling - handsome and brave, but damaged by war. They had great chemistry. Their storyline was complex and entertaining. I particularly enjoyed the author's writing style during the scenes with Kat, Rand, Laurie, and Elena. Looking forward to book 5!
Edward and Lady Katherine are torn apart by her father's refusal to allow them to wed. The prologue describing their disappointment and Edward's announcement that he's leaving to join the military is heart breaking. Edward hopes to distinguish himself in battle so he can be more than just a second son and win Katherine's father's approval to wed her. He accomplishes his goal and earns the title of Earl as a great strategist under Wellington, but six years later, Edward returns a changed man. He suffers from PTSD and no longer feels he'll be a good husband for Katherine. He wants her happiness above all else and tries to stay away from her in support of her betrothal to Laurie, Viscount Sinclair.

Lady Katherine and Lord Sinclair appear to be the perfect, golden couple. They are both popular and admired by society and Sinclair is smitten with Kat. Everyone thinks it's a love match. They certainly like and respect each other, but Kat's heart is not engaged since she has never gotten over Edward. When Edward, now Lord Randolph, returns to London, Kat tries to win him back to no avail. Edward is too afraid his PTSD will make Katherine suffer as his wife. When Edward finally decides he wants to live his life courageously and above all he wants Katherine, will it be too late? Will he be able woo her back after pushing her away?

Katherine, Edward and even Lord Sinclair are mostly likable characters who are worth rooting for to see their HEA. Katherine's cousin Toby was under Edward's command during the war, and he plays an integral role in the story. Katherine demonstrates her depth as more than just a society darling through spending time with injured veterans and choosing quiet walks over being seen in popular Hyde Park. The story mostly takes place in London at balls, dinner parties and outings with a few scenes in the country at house parties and the Harvest Festival. The conflicts in the book mostly arise through the scene stealing character, The Maid of Malagon, a Spanish temptress who's in London to receive commendation from the Prince Regent for her heroism in the war.

Overall, the writing is natural and well edited and there's a good balance of dialogue. I liked this book, but it wasn't a favorite. It's worth a read if you're looking for a quick diversion and an escape to another period in time. Even though PTSD is a serious subject, the author handles this topic with a light hand and keeps the story moving forward at a brisk pace. The real star of this book is Kat's and Edward's enduring love for one another and their chemistry practically leaps off the pages. Readers will be rooting for them to be reunited.
